Netflix’s first animated film will star Channing Tatum as George Washington

Netflix’s first animated film is coming. It’s called America: The Motion Picture, and as reported by Deadline it’s “an R-rated revisionist history tale about the founding of the country.”

The film will star Channing Tatum as the voice of George Washington, and has a script by The Expendables’ David Callaham (who is also currently at work on an untitled Zombieland sequel). It will be produced by Matt Thompson and Adam Reed, the duo behind Archer, and Thompson will also direct.

While another joke-y revisionist history of the United States sounds paralyzing boring, the associated talent is promising, and Netflix has a pretty good reputation for picking strong projects every time they move into a new content type or genre — think House of Cards (season 1 only, please!), Making a Murderer, Beasts of No Nation, etc. Channing Tatum, for his part, seems to be having a nice time voicing animated versions of classic American pop culture figures, as he just turned in a performance as Superman in The Lego Batman Movie.
